Cause Story: Batey Relief Alliance

Give women and girls the tools to succeed

Meet Katherine, a 20-year-old woman from one of the poorest communities in the Dominican Republic. She dreams of one day becoming a school teacher, but until recently, she could not afford the cost to go to school.

“At the beginning of 2017, I was about to stop my studies because I could not find the money to pay for transportation,” said Katherine.

In the same year, she was invited to attend a livelihood workshop led by the Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) and supported by a UNFCU Foundation grant. The workshop empowers local women with the skills to start and manage small agriculture farms to support themselves and their families.

As part of the workshop, participants are taught the importance of saving any profits from their business to re-invest in other initiatives that can help them break the cycle of poverty.

"This program has positively impacted my life and my financial situation,” said Katherine. “Not only for providing me with seed money to start my small business, but for teaching me how I can use a small amount of borrowed funds to generate an income that will allow me to continue my education to become a teacher."

Katherine’s story is one example of the many lives that are changed by grants from the UNFCU Foundation.
